Homesickness is a common and natural experience that many college students face when they leave the familiarity of home and embark on their higher education journey. The transition to college life can be exciting, yet the physical and emotional distance from family, friends, and the comfort of home can trigger feelings of homesickness. In this article, we will explore the causes of homesickness, its impact on students, and provide practical strategies to cope with and overcome homesickness in college.

“Sometimes with the feeling of loneliness, we can start to feel like we’re the only one who is experiencing that,” says Margaret Morgan, director of the Center for Student Support and Care at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. “The feelings of loneliness, especially moving somewhere new, is an incredibly typical experience. So giving yourself permission to feel those things and acknowledging that’s a part of it is huge.” 1

Causes of Homesickness:
